This jacket by Mugler is fabulous and luxurious, and I am going to use it to blog about Mugler's influences & aesthetic here; as its very 1930s 1940s sci fi meets country chic, and have a little fun too as usual...fashion should have some fantasy and fun after all! So for eg would look very chic with the current trend of pair of beige or white wide leg or palazzo style pants, at an event like polo. What's polo got to do with sci fi? Well you do know that Flash Gordon was an internationally renowned Polo player....right? More about that shortly, but first a little about the garment.
The high real silk content makes the wool very soft to the touch. There are areas in the fabric which have a soft sheen in the light; and at those points the weave of herringbone looks 'out of focus'. It really is special. So it's not exactly herringbone, looks like it's 'materialized' with some disruption when transported heh. A special weave; an abstraction of herringbone if you like. I mean, it is REALLY beautiful, but be aware it does not have uniform pattern neither is it meant to. So soft and luxurious. The skirt in this fabric I had was a fitted figure flattering shortish pencil skirt, typical of the mid 1990s so does it date from then? I can only speculate tbh.
It is a size UK 10, but fine for a UK 8 also (I am a UK 8, and it would be better for a 10 but I would def wear. The jacket has padded shoulders, with a piping which goes across and down the sleeves to a V, a technique Mugler also used on his late 1980s jackets. and nicely fitted on the waist with a fabulous sculpted brass ring catch, and two hidden poppers, so fits very neatly at the waist.
I used to be a flight attendant, and myself and my colleagues were issued basic uniforms which weren't so bad but at the time Mugler was the aspiration, and so we'd take them to the seamstress and say 'Make it look like a Mugler' and she did her best fair play!
So yes, the 1930s. An era usually left out of those who write in praise of Mugler; who cite the 1940s and 1950s as influences which of course they undoubtedly were. But , the late 1920s & 1930s were absolutely an influence on his aesthetic too, and , specifically that is where the sci fi futurist look came from. Check out his Metropolis 1930s inspired dress and helmet as early as 1979 . Seriously google it or have a look at my video on freeze frame. You can follow my story then too about the aesthetic, via parody 1930s sci fi story.
In the serials of Flash, and Buck Rogers, he was played by Buster Crabbe. An Olympic swimmer ...and as I say...you know...powerful swimmers. In the comic strip Flash Gordon was introduced as an International Polo player of renown. On the plane with Dale Arden. In my parody 'comic strip', I've bumped her out the way and made way for Angel Arden air stewardess! Well, more Flash Gordon's type. You may recall those who follow my ramblings, I invented her for another Mugler jacket ...a Leather... as an interplanetary 1930s Space age motorcycle cop. Well now she's back and had a promotion, so she is in addition to being undercover as an air stewardess, a Marshal for Universal Galactic Law on Enhance Robotics.
See ever since the robot wars of the 25th century, in our alternative 1930s sci fi universe. enhanced robots are banned. Horse robots were particularly devastating able to destroy entire infantry groups and travel at 200 mph , and have advanced ai thinking skills. So now, our horse robots are reprogrammed, and there is a glut of them, as they were easier to transport across vastness of space, and must meet criteria to be as real horses behaviorally. They are even programmed to think they are real horses, and sweat, steam, snort drink and eat as real ones. And so perform in the sport of intergalactic polo which is now used to settle international and interplanetary disputes rather than war. As you can imagine, Argentina are Galactic champions 7 times over and thus are a leading power along with the USA and CCCP (it's an alternative universe, and as even Mugler's 'star' allegedly inspired from his 1988 shoot in the former Soviet Union, and the amazing monuments eg the 'Conquerors of Space' ). But, in this years Galactic Cup, from nowhere, the Martian and Titan colonies are both through to the last 8 of the competition so our 'Angels' from M.U.G.L.E.R. have been sent to investigate. I have used the kind of helmets (instead of trad polo helmets) they wore in Flash Gordon & Buck Rogers on these strange planets, kind of Classical helmets with a 1930s Art Deco twist. And Mugler used similar in some of his shows, even winged helmets ! And of course there were his 'robot' outfits which 1927 Fritz Lang movie 'Metropolis' clearly inspired. So there ya go Fashion should be all about fantasy and that's mine to share with you heh! I think the spirit of where Mugler was coming from on times. Enjoy the parody comic covers which hopefully shows off the 1930s does 25th century but with a bit of a, English country style twist ! I have a polo mallet in my hall and it just begged to be teamed up with the Mugler jacket, so it happened in my mind. I love horses, I was keen to go to the Polo in UK. I was thrilled to find it is so inexpensive next to other sporting events, and that you can take your own picnic it is a lovely day out. First time I went, I'd worn a summer 50s dress but was a bit chilly still, so I noticed a girl in 1930s style sunglasses, wide leg pants, but with a beige tweed jacket with big shoulder pads and fitted at waist. She looked gorgeous as she trod in the divots, and while she looked so 1930s Marlene Dietrich to me, my friend thought she was model Amy Wesson (though it wasn't, she was a model apparently) . Amy was modelling for Mugler perfume at the time hence this all fits together heh.
Now there's a woman who could wear a pant suit, Marlene Dietrich. An avid polo fan too, she famously made the Polo Lounge at the Beverley Hills Hotel change their rule in 1936: “you don’t tell this woman she can’t come in” (Margaret Anderson hotel proprietor). So I asked Ai to recreate her for me and I have used her as a guest 'model' to wear the jacket heh. But I also put her in a period above knee 90s leather skirt and boots too just to show how versatile the jacket is. Dietrich was an inspiration to Mugler of course he virtually dressed Jerry Hall as Dietrich style wise in his 1995 Haute Couture show. And he used her singing in catwalk shows. But also Polo playing Joan Crawford looked amazing in wide leg pants and cinched jackets too, as did Barbara Stanwyck another huge polo fan and horsewoman, Kathryn Hepburn whose lover and on screen partner Spencer Tracy was a big polo player, and Paulette Goddard, whose husband Charlie Chaplin played polo too. In short, polo was huge in the 1930s ! As were wide leg pants and tailored jackets. Now as I say, I think Mugler intended this to be worn with the shortish 90s pencil skirts of the time but as these wide leg pants are really 'in' atm especially in beiges and off whites, then this is the perfect jacket for the style look I am channeling here. You WILL command attention in this, but its subtle it's not like it's a crazier Mugler design, and it OOZES class. Or any event really that is formal but you also want to be comfy casual and radiate that elegance, WITH a little edge.
So my 'Spirit of the Age and Garment' song, is of course, 'Avenging Angels' by the band, Space !
"Angel oh angel
Here to brighten up my darkest day
Take me in your arms
Protect me from my enemies
When they're just about to do the deadly deed
You rescue me (rescue me)
Angels ...Angels ....
Kick Ass Angels"
Space & Mugler ...especially us bad girls....yeah 'The Female of the Species is more Deadlier than the Male' heh.Angels and Femme Fatales are not at odds... we are one.
