Vintage dark green and white real suede fluffy white sheepskin coat fur trim cuffs with hood unlined, C&A 1960s 1970s penny lane

Vintage dark green real suede, and fluffy white sheepskin fur coat, that dates from c between 1969 and 1972. It is a mistake to call these kinds of coats 'Penny Lane' coats because that is an anachronism they were never called that at the time it dates from a Y2k movie, and unlike those raggy synthetic things from the high street that movie spawned, this is the real thing and made to last. Looks better 55 years on from its manufacture than those synthetic fakes which are often in landfill swiftly. And YET, this was a high street brand: C&A. Now sure, it is unlined so they cut corners like that but it is the fact they used real suede (and decent quality not too rough) and real lovely sheepskin which is not discoloured, it is a natural white and still looks fresh.

Ideal style statement for the 1960s and 1970s enthusiast, for new psychedelia  devotees, and being unlined is fine for most warmer weather in the evenings for eg. So perfect for gigs too as you aren't going to get hot in it but will keep you warm enough in your mini dress if it turns a bit cooler!

So 55 years old, and 'green' in more ways than one you could say!

It is marked a size UK 12 but of course vintage sizes were smaller, so this is closer to a UK 6, 8 or 10.

Well it may only be 2025, and not 2525, the 'spirit of the age and garment' I have chose for this piece, "2525" by Zager and Evans, but the concerns they raise in that song of the time seem relevant. It warns of a bleak future where technology destroys the individuality & identity of humans, and rapes the planet of resources in doing so. And we are pretty much already there when you see the landfill problem. And yet this was high street fashion of the time, and we still have it, so clearly it's synthetics and 'disposable' garments (often masquerading as utility but you KNOW how easily wrecked synthetic anoraks and puffas are tear so easy, and the loss of individuality there too everyone looking the same! Well if you are looking here & on Etsy you are looking to escape that conformity and get something special that turns heads and this sure will!

So a coat like this a win-win.

Late 1960s  early 970s when these coats were big, also saw some great sci fi movies such as Planet of the Apes series warning of nuclear annihilation, Soyent Green a warning about tech fake food (they eventually make tablets of recycled humans!) and THX 1138 warning of the loss of individual identity. Such great movies, and yet here we in 2025 are and all those warnings perhaps not heeded.

Even counter-culture of the time got it: that natural was best. Thing afghan coats for eg. Not that this is an afghan either, they are characterized by embroidery and a rougher afghan ethnic look. This by contrast is a higb street fashion look, though came in shortly after the afghans appeared. So it's smarter looking, and more 'dolly bird' than hippy. Indeed Nerys Hughes in the Liver Birds wore one c 1972 in the series, and Mariska Veres of Shocking Blue (who did the song 'Venus') who did 'Venus' also had one or two similar c 1969. Both wore with Go-Go boots !  And of course there is a pair on view in the movie Easy Rider of 1969, and though that is counter culture movie it is full of suede leather and even vintage fur! They got it back then it seems. You know think about it: how would a synthetic leather come off in falling from a motorcycle on to the road? There is a reason they were leather it's hardy. And Mods of the 1960s pioneered suede as a fashion and functional coat. These coats were somewhere between the Mod and Hippy suede coats, and as stated, often associated with the later 60s early 70s dolly bird look. So they'd have been worn with suede hot pants and mini skirts with those boots.

Anyway, this is a gorgeous coat you will have a lot of fun in,  and hopefully look after! It is not lined as I mentioned, so it isn't one for winter, on the contrary this is ideal for wearing on those summer evenings in the pub garden, or for a stroll along a breezy clifftop walk, or a summer park party or gig going in to evening. BUT if you wear it to somewhere like Glastonbury keep it out of the mud and thrown beer please!  Respect your clothes and look after them for next generation as this has been.
