Ah a dress made for the old Jo Stafford 1950s song....
"See the pyramids along the Nile
Watch the sun rise on a tropic isle
Just remember, darling, all the while
You belong to me
See the marketplace in old Algiers
Send me photographs and souvenirs
Just remember when a dream appears
You belong to me..."
Absolutely stunning 1950s original vintage dress in gold, a cedar brown and ochre stripes with dramatic chevron Y design. ROCK the Kasbah in this sensational piece! No label but it would appear from the workmanship a couturier seamstress rather than a homemade item. The concealed zipped at front and the under bust tailoring, as well as the chevron match up are just exquisite!
Fabulous along the shoulders, tapering in the sleeve to a tight 3/4 finish. Makes you want to cry for the Hollywood 1950s age of romance it is so exquisitely period elegant.
Effortless to wear, but certainly no mean feat to produce something this special. A light cotton pique fabric with a gold lurex thread, such a perfect expression of the time even at the weaving level.
I may change my mind on selling this as it fits me like a glove. So if you are a size 7/8 its going to be fab on you too.
If I was destined for North Africa or Moorish Spain or Southern Italy , and I may be at some point, NO WAY would I part with this it is definitely a one of a kind dress!
Ah how I miss my studies of classical Archaeology on times! As you can tell from my other listings atm.
I fact I had a 1950s white dress with gold chevron stripes very much in this style when I visited Egypt back in the 80s; but this one is even more fabulous.
They literally do not make them like this any more, sadly. If I took this to my exceptional seamstress to make her jaw would drop to the floor and start talking telephone numbers to make even if we could source a fabric as beautiful...
